Bewick, Thomas and Middleton, R. Hunter
Thomas Bewick, ten working drawing reproductions shown with impressions of the corresponding engravings.
Chicago: Cherryburn Press, 1972. Limited edition. Pp. (10) booklet + 10 folder-maps each with two images, housed in a folding hard portfolio case backed in one-quarter tan cloth, with red-paper title label on spine, over patterned charcoal paper-covered boards, housed in a paper-covered dark gray patterned hard slipcase rimmed in red at the opening of the case, oblong 8vo (8 x 6 3/4 inches). This edition was limited to 160 copies, each signed by the printer, R. Hunter Middleton on the last page of the printed introductory booklet. The text is printed in black and red. Nine of the mats contain an impression from the original wood block, along with a reproduction of Bewick's drawing for that block. This was to have been the case for the 10th mat but Middleton notes on the introduction: ""With the exception of the Harrier Dog [plate 10], all of the engravings were printed from Bewick's original blocks. Unfortunately, it was necessary to print this subject from a photoengraving reproduces from the Memorial Edition since the original block was not available to the Press."" No ownership marks but from the private library of R. Hunter Middleton who owned the Cherryburn Press. A touch of wear to the outer corners only of the slipcase, contents are bright as new; a tight and clean copy in near fine condition..
